    Story

Nestled in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka boasts a rich history spanning over 2500 years, complete with captivating legends and myths. One such intriguing saga is the story of King Vijaya, his arrival, and the founding of a dynasty that echoes through the annals of time.

    Early Life of Prince Vijaya

As per the Mahavamsa, Prince Vijaya, the protagonist of this tale, was the offspring of King Sinhabahu and Sinhaseevali. Sinhabahu's origin was shrouded in myth, as he was believed to be the son of a royal princess named Suppadevi from Vanga Desa and a lion named 'Sinha.' This lion, albeit paradoxical, was said to possess human qualities. During Suppadevi's travels to Magadha, she encountered a lion that abducted her and carried her to its cave. This unusual union resulted in the birth of two children: Sinhabahu and Sinhaseevali.

The lion-father protected his offspring within a cave in Lala, sealing its entrance with a formidable rock. However, as Sinhabahu matured and gained strength, he broke free with his mother and sister. The lion-father, upon realizing this, searched for his family but tragically met his demise at the hands of his own son.

Following the death of the King of Vanga Desa, Sinhabahu assumed the throne before returning to Lala. Here, he founded the city of Sinhapura, marrying his sister and fathering sixteen pairs of twins, with Vijaya and Sumitta being the first.

The Arrival of Prince Vijaya in Sri Lanka

Prince Vijaya's youth was marred by unruly behavior, leading to his banishment by the king in a bid to restore peace to the kingdom. Thus, Vijaya and his followers embarked on a journey that eventually led them to the shores of Thambapanni in northwest Sri Lanka. The name 'Thambapanni' was aptly chosen as the sand, upon Vijaya's arrival, bore the hue of copper – 'Thamba' meaning copper in Sinhalese and 'Panni' signifying land in Tamil.

At this juncture, Sri Lanka was inhabited by three distinct tribes: the Yaksha (Devil), Naga (Snake), and Deva (God). These tribes were known for their magical prowess, each contributing differently to the island's ecosystem. Yaksha people were skilled in ironwork, Raksha people in agriculture, Naga people in trade, and Deva people served as rulers.

The Love Story of Vijaya and Kuveni

Upon landing in Thambapanni, some of Vijaya's men ventured inland but mysteriously vanished. In his quest to find them, Vijaya encountered Kuveni, a Yaksha princess who had captured his men. A tense standoff ensued, leading to Kuveni's release of the captives. In an unexpected twist, love blossomed between Vijaya and Kuveni.

Their romance, however, culminated tragically in the betrayal of Kuveni's own people, resulting in the destruction of their city, Sirisavatthu.

    Vijaya Ascends the Throne

With time, Vijaya and his followers established settlements across Sri Lanka, becoming the Sinhala people. Vijaya was ultimately crowned the first king of recorded history in Sri Lanka, reigning over these scattered settlements.

The Romance That Turned Into Tragedy

Vijaya and Kuveni, now a couple, bore a son and a daughter. However, royal tradition dictated that Vijaya must marry a bride of royal lineage to ascend the throne. Heartbreakingly, Kuveni was forced to leave, taking their children with her. Regrettably, her own tribe later took her life in Lankapura, another Yaksha city. It is believed that the indigenous Veddah tribe in Sri Lanka descended from Vijaya's son Jeewahaththa and daughter Disala.

Vijaya, now a king with a royal princess as his queen but without an heir, passed away, leaving the kingdom in turmoil. After a year without a king, Vijaya's nephew, Panduvasudeva, the son of Vijaya's twin brother Sumitta, arrived to claim the throne.

    The Legacy of Vijaya

The story of Prince Vijaya's arrival and reign in Sri Lanka, while veiled in myth, holds a significant place in Sri Lankan history. It is believed to be the origin story of the Sinhalese nation, leaving an indelible mark on the island's heritage.

Intricately woven with legends, this tale of love, betrayal, and the establishment of a kingdom is a testament to the enduring cultural richness of Sri Lanka.
