Sri Lanka Welcomed 138,241 Tourists

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector witnessed a significant uptick in arrivals this June, propelled by the influx of devotees for the Bohra Convention.

However, despite this boost, the nation fell short of its ambitious target for the month, highlighting the ongoing challenges in achieving its annual tourism goals.

Tourist arrivals in June 2025 reached 138,241, a 21.8 percent Year-on-Year (YoY) increase from the 113,470 visitors recorded in the same period last year.

The surge is largely attributed to the Bohra community’s global convention, which commenced on June 27 and is expected to draw over 15,000 devotees from across the globe.

The event, running until July 5, is being held in conjunction with the Ashara Mubaraka sermons delivered by the community’s spiritual leader, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin.

This influx resulted in a dramatic spike in daily arrivals towards the end of the month. The fourth week of June (22nd to 28th) saw 39,688 tourist arrivals.

A review of the top source markets for June 2025 shows a significant shift in regional travel. India maintained its position as the top source market, growing to 37,934 arrivals from 28,631 in June 2024.

The United Kingdom and China also held their second and third positions with 11,628 and 8,804 tourists, respectively, both showing an increase from the previous year’s figures of 9,266 and 8,575. Australia followed, retaining its fourth position with 7,299 arrivals, up from 6,317 in 2024.

The influence of the Bohra Convention was evident as Pakistan entered the top ten at fifth place with 6,833 tourists. Bangladesh also climbed the ranks to sixth place with 5,826 arrivals. Other nations in the top ten included Germany with 5,498 arrivals , the United States with 5,422 , France with 4,345 , and Canada with 4,239 arrivals. Notably, the Maldives and the Russian Federation, which were in the top ten in June 2024, were replaced by Pakistan and France in the June 2025 rankings.
